Alexander Mikhailovich Rimsky-Korsakov
Alexander Michailowitsch Rimski-Korsakow (Russian Александр Михайлович Римский-Корсаков; born August 24, 1753 in Moscow , † May 25, 1840 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian general in the coalition wars .
Korsakov started a military career at a very young age. He fought with distinction in the Russo-Austrian Turkish War in 1788 and 1789 and in the Russo-Swedish War . As a Major General of the Semenowskischen Guard - Regiment he was by the Empress Catherine II. Commissioned to accompany the Comte d'Artois to England and went from there to Flanders , where he of the June 26, 1794 Battle of Fleurus attended. When he returned to Petersburg, he took part in the war against Persia under Subov .
Tsar Paul I called him back when he ascended the throne and in 1799 gave him command of an army of 40,000 men in order to drive the French out of Switzerland according to Archduke Karl's campaign plan . Korsakov took a position near Zurich along with the Austrian corps of General Friedrich von Hotze , but was attacked and defeated here on September 25 in the Second Battle of Zurich by the French under André Masséna . He had to withdraw, led the remnants of his army to Lindau and united them with the army of Marshal Alexander Suworow , who took over the command. Korsakow returned to Russia with Suvorov via Bohemia . When Alexander I ascended the throne in 1801, Korsakov was appointed general of the cavalry . From 1805 to 1830 he was Governor General of Lithuania , later a member of the Imperial Council in Saint Petersburg.
