The Russo-Persian War of 1796 was the second in a series of wars between the Russian Empire and Persia in the 18th and 19th centuries , the Russo-Persian Wars . The war took place in the Caucasus and had no major consequences for the states involved.

Causes and Reason

In the last decades of the 18th century, several candidates fought for the Persian throne . Catherine the Great of Russia used this weakness of Persia to expand its influence in the Caucasus. The Georgian Kingdom of Kartlien-Kakheti became a Russian reserve in 1783. Three years later, Dagestan also became part of the Russian sphere of influence.

After Aga Mohammed Khan was crowned Shah of Persia in 1794, he wanted to regain the Caucasus for Persia. In 1795 he moved to Georgia, conquered Tbilisi and forced Kartli-Kakheti again under Persian suzerainty. Thereupon Catherine the Great decided a punitive expedition against the Shah.

course

Catherine commissioned Count Valerian Subow, the younger brother of her lover Prince Subow , to lead the 13,000-strong Russian army. In April 1796 he led the army from Kisljar and captured the fortress of Derbent on May 10th . In June, Subov's forces took over most of northern Azerbaijan without resistance, including the Baku , Shirvan and Ganja khanates . In November they stood at the confluence of the Macaw and Kura .

After the ruler died that month and Paul succeeded her on the throne, who despised the Subovs and had other plans, the army under Valerian Subov was recalled.

Effects

The war had no further impact on the region due to the recall of the army.

Subov and other officers involved in the campaign were involved in the murder of Paul five years later.

The conquest of Derbent was celebrated in an ode by the court poet Gavriil Romanowitsch Derschawin . He later also wrote a poem about Subov's lackluster return from the campaign.
