Baku Khanate

The Baku Khanate was a Persian vassal state in what is now Azerbaijan , which existed from 1747 to 1806. The capital of the Khanate was on the Caspian Sea located Baku .

After the fall of the Safavid Empire in Persia, Baku was occupied by Russia in 1723 . During this time Baku was already briefly independent under Dargah Quli Khan from the Afsharid family . In 1735 the city was regained for Persia by Nadir Shah . After his death, the independent Baku Khanate was founded, the first ruler was Mirza Muhammad Khan. It later became part of the more powerful Quba Khanate . It became independent again in the 1890s.

On June 13, 1796, a Russian fleet entered Baku Bay . A garrison of the Russian army was quartered in the city. General Pavel Zizianow became the commandant of Baku. On the orders of Tsar Paul I , Russian troops left the city in 1797.

During the Russo-Persian War , Tsar Alexander intended to annex Baku in January 1806. The assassination of the responsible general Zizianow during the surrender delayed its integration into the Russian Empire until October of the same year. The peace of Gulistan in 1813 confirmed the status quo.
