Suvorov Monument

The Suworow Monument is a monument in the Schöllenen Gorge near the Devil's Bridge in the Swiss canton of Uri . A 12-meter-high cross carved into the rock commemorates the fighting that took place on September 25, 1799 as part of the Second Coalition War in this area between Napoleonic troops under Claude-Jacques Lecourbe (1758–1815) and General Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov commanded Russian troops took place.

history

The monument was initiated by Prince Sergei Galitzin , who wanted the work to be built at his own expense. In 1883 the Swiss Federal Council approved the request, but declared the design and inscription to be subject to approval. Again, this only happened after the purpose of the site had been changed and was now to be built in honor of the fallen soldiers . The building of a monument to a foreign general would not have been possible for reasons of neutrality. The cantonal government could not make friends with a monument to the "invasion of foreign powers".

The construction was approved by the owner of the land, the Corporations Council Urseren , whereby the area was assigned to the Russian Empire free of charge according to the decision of the Corporation Council of October 13, 1893 . The construction work with the support of the Russian Foreign Ministry lasted almost three years, to the displeasure of the state government, which, according to the council minutes, had approved a “memorial plaque for the victims”, a death mark. A heroic draft had previously been rejected.

In the 1980s, the site was in poor condition, and it turned out that no parcel was entered in the land register. It was also not clear whether it was a building permit or an assignment . Although the document attesting the assignment and Russian ownership was delivered from the archives in Moscow, the then Soviet Union announced that it was not responsible for the renovation of a "Helvetic monument". However, the Swiss cultural authorities stated that this was mainly a matter for the owner.

The 563 m² area (449 m² rock and 114 m² access road) is maintained by the municipality of Andermatt, owned by the Russian state in the form of the Russian embassy in Bern. The relevant parcel no. 725 of the Andermatt land register is subject to Swiss law without restriction and is part of Swiss territory.

Russian President Dmitri Medvedev visited the monument on his state visit in 2009. He was accompanied by Federal President Hans-Rudolf Merz .
