geography
The community is located in the Panixertal through which the Schmuèr flows, a steeply rising northern side valley of the Vorderrhein Valley, eleven and a half kilometers northwest of Ilanz . It has a share in the Vorab glacier . North and above the town is the Panixersee ( 1452 m above sea level. M. ) and short distance to the waterfall Ouch da Fluaz. The entire northern part of the municipality consists of mountains, which is also reflected in the area statistics. Of the approximately 18 km² municipal area, 877 hectares are unproductive areas or mountains. Of the 647 ha of agricultural land, 598 ha are alpine farms or meadows . Another 267 hectares are covered by forest and wood, and the remaining 7 hectares are settlements.
The villagers are worried about the annual ruffle and slide, which also damage the road network. Through the realization of the Panixersee , around 60% of which is in the Panixer municipal area, financial contributions were generated that relieved the municipal budget.
The high alpine Panixerpass (Rätorom. Pass dil Veptga ) connects Pigniu with Elm in the Glarner Sernftal . He gained some notoriety when the army of the Russian General Suvorov crossed the pass, which was snowed in winter, in an evasive maneuver in front of the French. Today, this frequently used alpine pass hike mainly leads from Sernftal to Pigniu or Andiast in midsummer.
The long-distance hiking trail Senda Sursilvana leads as a touristic marked high trail from Brigels - Waltensburg -Andiast through Panix and further along the young Rhine towards Chur.

A census from 1835 counted 73 community citizens in Pigniu, 11 lived in another community and two residents came from another Graubünden community. Since then, the population living on mountain agriculture had only reached a maximum number of around 80 people in the 1930s, but today, due to increasing aging and the threat of emigration, a greater decline in population must be expected. The majority of the inhabitants are Roman Catholic and speak the Rhaeto-Romanic idiom Sursilvan .
traffic
The road connection from Rueun to Pigniu consisted of a narrow driveway until 1907, which was repeatedly expanded in 1907 and 1922/23 until 1931 and placed a heavy burden on the municipal treasury. The community has to maintain an extensive network of main and secondary roads as well as melioration routes. Parts of the road network were co-financed by the municipality of Domat / Ems in 1926 , as it is the owner of the Alp Ranasca leading to the Panixer pass. In 1974 a post bus service to Rueun was financed, which also brought the schoolchildren to the valley.
