coat of arms

Blazon : In blue an upright golden (yellow) lion, accompanied by three golden balls (2: 1)

The coat of arms is a combination of the coat of arms of the Lords of Valendas (three black spheres in silver (white)) with the coat of arms of Mont auf Löwenberg , who are related by marriage to them , which also determined the colors of the former municipal coat of arms .

geography

The place is located on a terrace above the right side of the Vorderrhein Gorge ( Ruinaulta ) on the northern slope of Piz Riein at an altitude of 810 m. In addition to the village, the hamlets of Brün, Carrera, Dutjen (consisting of Ober- and Unterdutjen) and Turisch as well as individual farms belong to the former municipality. The lowest point of the former municipal area is at an altitude of 635 meters, the highest point is the Tällistock (2604 m) .

Of the entire former municipal area of almost 23 km², 1110 hectares are forested and 635 hectares of mountains. Only 98 of the 493 hectares of arable land are alpine meadows. The remainder of the former municipal area of 41 ha is settlement area.

history

In the will of Bishop Tello from 765 the place is mentioned for the first time under the name Valendano . In the 12th century, a noble family of Valendas appeared who served various barons. The Counts of Werdenberg later took over their property. The residents bought their tithe free in 1526 and acquired Valendas Castle in 1529 , which then fell apart. During the time of the Helvetic Republic , the place belonged to the district of Glenner in the canton of Rhaetia .

The - probably pre-German - place name Valendas cannot be interpreted with certainty.

Originally the population consisted of Graubünden novels. The hamlets, on the other hand, were populated by Walsers . Centuries ago they settled in the village, so that today the entire former community is German-speaking. Of the 306 residents at the end of 2004, 295 were Swiss nationals. The former congregation is a traditionally Reformed denomination .

traffic

The former municipality is connected to the public transport network by the Ilanz - Versam postbus line . It also shares the Valendas-Sagogn stop of the Rhaetian Railway with Sagogn . To the west of the stop, the Rhine bridge Valendas-Sagogn connects the two villages of Valendas and Sagogn.

Film set

In 2015, Valendas was used as the location for the Swiss feature film Gotthard , which was first shown in December 2016. The historic town center replaced the actual location of Göschenen . For the filming, all references to the present were removed from the townscape, house facades were trimmed to old and the canton road was given a gravel surface.
