geography

Geologically, the Gruob is the bottom of the lake that was dammed up around 10,000 years ago by the Flims landslide . In the course of time the Vorderrhein ate its way through the debris, the lake emptied and left the wide, fertile hollow of the Gruob.

history

Historically, the Gruob formed its own judicial community in the Gray League with Sagogn as the main town, which was replaced by Ilanz at the end of the Middle Ages.

Property of the Chur bishop since 1483 , the Gruob bought itself free as a consequence of the Ilanz articles in 1538. The Reformation , which was accepted by one part of the parishes and rejected by another, split the Gruob confessionally and led to a short-term separation of the Catholic villages during the Sagenser trade around 1700.

language

Linguistically speaking, the Gruob is Rhaeto-Romanic, with the exception of the villages of Versam and Valendas , which are oriented towards the Safien Valley and populated by Walsers . The Ilanz Center is linguistically mixed and has been striving for bilingualism for some time .
