The Wohlensee is a reservoir on the Aare , located in the Swiss canton of Bern, northwest of the city of Bern, between Herrenschwanden in the municipality of Kirchlindach and Mühleberg .
geography
Because the Wohlensee is located in a ravine dug into the molasse underground by the Aare, it is narrow and long. The flow speed in the reservoir is low, which is why the silting up of the lake below the Halen Bridge is progressing rapidly.
The Kappelenbrücke , a concrete bridge that was opened in 1920 and replaced the old river crossing that was flooded by the lake, crosses the Wohlensee . A side street leads over the dam.
power plant
The lake is dammed near Mühleberg by the gravity dam of the ⊙ Mühleberg hydroelectric power station . In the machine house, six Francis turbines , each with an output of 6 MW, generate 50 Hz electricity for the national network, and a Kaplan turbine with an output of 9 MW generates 16.7 Hz electricity for the rail network .
The Bern government council granted the concession to build the power station in 1917. For this purpose, the Gümmenen – Mühleberg trackless railway was set up in 1918 . When the damming of the water began after the construction was completed in July 1920, more than 300 hectares of land disappeared into the water. The power plant went into operation on August 23, 1920.
In 2017 the power plant license was renewed for 80 years.
About 1.5 km below the hydropower plant is the Mühleberg nuclear power plant , which was in operation between 1972 and 2019.
leisure
The Rowing Club Bern was founded in 1919 . The clubhouse is in the Eymatt near Bern, in the upper area of the Wohlensee, which is considered to be one of the most suitable waters in Switzerland for rowing.
The 1973 founded SC Wohlensee , a football club in the municipality of Wohlen, plays directly on the lake below the Kappelenring development.
In 1997, the Wohlensee rowing club was founded. He promotes rowing on the Wohlensee as a popular sport and regularly offers courses for beginners and advanced.
sewage
Among other things, the wastewater mixed with chlorine is fed from the Weyermannshaus swimming pool in Bern into the Wohlensee.
