The Klingnau power plant ( KRA ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Aare , between the Aargau communities of Klingnau and Koblenz . The power plant is owned by the Aarekraftwerk Klingnau AG stock corporation based in Klingnau.

Shareholders are:

• AEW Energie AG (40%)
• Axpo AG (former Northeastern Switzerland power plants , NOK) (60%)

The system was built between 1931 and 1935 about 400 meters above the point where the Aare flows into the Rhine. The Klingnau power plant and its Klingnau reservoir form the last barrage of the Aare. The building was heavily criticized at the time of the crisis because the domestic energy demand was almost 100% covered.

In 2012, the canton of Aargau decided to reassign the concession for the power plant. Two consortia applied for this. Axpo AG and AEW Energie AG were ultimately awarded the contract . Since 2015, these two companies have been the sole shareholders of the power plant as an AG under the name Aarekraftwerk Klingnau AG.
