The Matte power plant is a river power plant on the Aare in the Swiss federal city of Bern . It is located in the Matte district and is operated by Energie Wasser Bern .
history
The mat sill in the Aare was mentioned as early as 1218 and was already used at that time to use water power with mill wheels . In 1876, the city of Bern approved a loan of 175,000 francs to replace the many individual water wheels on the commercial canal with two turbines and to make the power available from now on via transmissions . The system was used until 1921.
In August 1891, the was Elektricitätswerk the city of Berne on the Wasserwerkgasse 15 ( 601358 / 199474 ) put into operation, which was later to Central I power plant was mat. The main purpose of the facility was to generate electricity for lighting purposes. Accordingly, the main load in the power grid operated with 120 V DC voltage occurred during the night. The excess energy generated during the day was stored in lead-acid batteries. In addition to generating electricity, the power plant operating a cable transmission , which m 60 upriver led along the Aare and there in a nacelle to generate compressed air for operation of the compressed air tram Bern the Bernese Tramway Company served.
In 1925 the operation was switched to three-phase current, so that the machine sets had to be replaced. Next, a second panel with two turbines in the rear part of the city at the mill Wasserwerkgasse 18 (was 601 365 / 199523 ) was established.
In 1985, a new underground power plant was at the Wasserwerkstrasse 13 (after 30 months of construction 601377 / 199491 reference) in operation, which replaced the two existing panels. Two generators were removed from the former headquarters I at Wasserwerkgasse 15, the third generator was left as a museum piece. Energie Bern rents the headquarters as an event space.

Electricity plant of the city of Bern 1891
The power plant was housed in the building at Wasserwerkgasse 15. There were three Jonval turbines supplied by Bell Maschinenfabrik , which had a total output of 350 hp. They used bevel gears to drive a common horizontal shaft that rotated at 125 min −1 . On the shaft pulleys were installed 2.5 meters in diameter, which over balata - drive belt of the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon six-pole supplied (MFO) DC generators drives, each of which could give an output of 100 kW. Only two generators were provided to operate the network, a third was set up as a reserve. The two generators in operation were connected in series and supplied a three-wire direct current network with a voltage of 2 × 120 V. Since the consumers were initially only lamps, the main load in the network occurred at night. The excess energy was collected in lead accumulators during the day . An additional motor generator group was available for charging the batteries, with which the batteries could be charged with a voltage higher than the mains voltage. The lead batteries came from the Wilhelm Hagen accumulator factory . These were 2 × 72 cells, with each group supporting one half of the three-wire network. For voltage regulation, cells could be switched on and off automatically.

Kraftwerk Matte 1925
During the renovation in 1925, the machine groups were replaced and a second center was built in the city mill. The old headquarters at Wasserwerkgasse 15 received three propeller turbines manufactured by Bell, and headquarters II in the Stadtmühle. The new generators came from MFO and from Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC). Both centers together had an installed turbine output of 1390 hp. In the statistics from 1947 a turbine power increased to 1580 HP is given. The generator output was 1.1 MW.
Kraftwerk Matte 1985
The power plant was newly built as an underground facility, which is located under the eastern forecourt of Central I from 1891. A single S-turbine is installed, which drives a generator via a gearbox, which can deliver an output of 1.15 MW.
