The Matt threshold is a longitudinal weir in the river Aare in the city of Bern . The weir is proven in the Middle Ages and serves to drain water into the Matte district , where businesses could settle. From 1891 the water was also used for the operation of the mat power plant of the city of Bern's electricity works , which later became Energie Wasser Bern (EWB).

history

The mat sill is mentioned before 1218. In 1360, the city of Bern acquired the threshold and the associated mills from Johann II von Bubenberg for 1,300 Florentines . Probably until the 17th century, the threshold consisted of a row of wooden boxes anchored in the river floor in block construction , which were filled with stones. In the years 1640 and 1641 a wall was built, which allowed higher traffic jams. The supervision was entrusted to a threshold master who lived in the threshold mätteli in house Dalmaziquai 11, today's restaurant threshold mätteli. In 1890 the weir consisted of 54 lock locks and nine deep locks. The mat sleeper was renovated between 1983 and 1991.

technology

The mat sill is located south of the peninsula with the old town of Bern at a point where the river bed has a natural step. A longitudinal weir running diagonally through the river forces around 40 m³ / s of water into a commercial sewer, where it is used by the Matte power station to generate energy. The usable gradient is 1.3 to 3.2 meters, depending on the drain. The longitudinal weir consists of 65 manual shooters and two semi-automatic shooters for winter operation. An automatic computer system removes up to 120 tons of rubbish every year .
