The Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt is a Chilean protected area. The reserve includes the sea in front of the fishing village of Punta Choros in La Higuera commune at the northern end of the Coquimbo region . A few kilometers further north it also includes the Isla Chañaral near Chañaral de Aceituno in the Atacama region .

geography

There are two islands in the area, the larger of which - Isla Choros with its steep coast - is not accessible to visitors. The smaller one - Isla Damas - can be visited and hiked as part of boat tours.

fauna and Flora

There are 59 plant species in the area, some of which are endemic. There are also 68 vertebrate species, including the Potoyunco , the coastal otter and the eponymous Humboldt penguin .

tourism

The sanctuary - especially the Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno bay - is suitable for whale watching. Whales, including blue whales , humpback whales , minke whales and fin whales , frequent the bay especially in November . Dolphins can also be observed all year round.
