La Higuera is a municipality in the Región de Coquimbo in Chile. It includes the localities of Caleta Los Hornos, Chungungo, Los Morros, La Higuera, El Trapiche, Punta Colorada, Quebrada Honda, Los Choros and Punta de Choros . The main town of La Higuera is located in a longitudinal valley in the coastal cordillera directly on Ruta 5 . The area of the municipality is mountainous, the climate, especially off the coast, is dry and sunny, but due to the Humboldt Current, mild.
The La Silla observatory is located in the municipality .
tourism
The municipality is known for long sandy beaches. On the territory of the municipality - near Punta Choros - there is, among other things, Isla Damas with the Pinguino de Humboldt reserve, an important protected area for seabirds and Humboldt penguins . Whales and dolphins can also be seen there.
