Ruta 5 (Chile)
The Ruta 5 ( RN 5 for short ), also known as the Panamericana in Chile ( Carretera Panamericana en Chile ), is a trunk road in this South American Andean state.
The Ruta 5 is the main artery of road traffic in the country, it extends with about 3363.97 km from the border with Peru to the city of Puerto Montt . It crosses grass steppes and the Atacama Desert in the far north of Chile, valleys and mountains in the small north and the center of the country, valleys in the central south and large forests and grasslands in the south of Chile. In Puerto Montt the route ends first as a Panamericana to the Canal de Chacao , and then crosses to the island of Chiloé . Meanwhile, the Carretera Austral begins in another arm of the street to the village of Villa O'Higgins . The construction of the road was laid down in Decree No. 556 of 1969 .
course
Arica - La Serena
The Arica-La Serena section of Ruta 5 is a national longitudinal axis in northern Chile. Its entire route through the regions of Arica y Parinacota , Tarapacá , Antofagasta , Atacama and Coquimbo over a length of 1,616.8 km is completely paved. It connects the Paso Concordia and the city of Arica with the cities of Iquique , Antofagasta , Calama , Chañaral , Copiapó , Vallenar , La Serena and Coquimbo . It is the most important country road in the north of Chilean and has a high volume of traffic, especially trucks and buses. It runs parallel to Ruta 1 , which runs along the coast to the south. Both then reunite in Antofagasta.
The beginning of the section is on the border with Peru and continues south towards Arica. From Tacna, Peru, the road comes as Ruta 1 into the country to Arica. In the north of this city you will find the only roundabout in the country that connects two international roads, namely the Ruta 5 and the Ruta 11 , which continue to Putre and Bolivia . The road has two lanes between the connection to the Aeropuerto Internacional Chacalluta Airport and Arica. It continues south over large and dangerous passes, such as the Acha (km 2061–2053), Chaca Norte (km 2039–2027), Chaca Sur (km 2023–2009), Camarones (km 1990–1969), Chiza (km 1948–1931), Tana (km 1911–1907), Tiliviche (km 1899–1892) and Quillagua (km 1643–1641), the last on the border of the Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions. This section also passes through the municipal capitals Cuya , Huara , Pozo Almonte , Baquedano . The same situation is repeated in the Antofagasta - Chañaral section with the Portezuelo Blanco pass (km 999-993) and the Vallenar - La Higuera section with the Pajonales (km 589-582) and Buenos Aires (km 523-513) passes, currently in Expansion to two lanes.
As on all of Ruta 5, and especially because of its length and the heavy traffic, there are many potholes in the route that are repaired every year. The section ends when you enter the urban area of La Serena, from here on the Ruta 5 continues in two lanes on the La Serena-Coquimbo section.
Together with Rutas 23 , 27 and 25 , it belongs to the Corredor Bioceánico Eje del Capricornio .
The official function of this longitudinal axis was ratified in 2000 by Decree Nº 2136 by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas de Chile (MOP).

Agglomeration La Serena / Coquimbo - Santiago de Chile
The La Serena-Coquimbo section is a national longitudinal axis and runs for 17 km through the La Serena-Coquimbo agglomeration in the Coquimbo region . It leads from La Serena to La Ligua along the coast, then crosses the Cordilleras to the town of La Calera , where it connects to Route 60 towards Gran Valparaíso and also towards Llay-Llay . There the Ruta 60 appears, which connects Chile with Mendoza through the Paso Internacional Los Libertadores .
It is the main artery of the La Serena-Coquimbo urban area. The road begins in the Puente Fiscal sector , to the north of the region's capital, La Serena and the mouth of the Elqui River . The section ends on the Pacific coast at La Herradura beach , in Coquimbo commune . In its course there are various petrol stations as well as intersections with the most important main roads of both cities. It is currently under investigation to give the section to private hands and then name the section Autopista del Mar.
The construction of the section is based on the decree of April 23, 1946, which was signed by the government under Juan Antonio Ríos , even if the expansion of the first asphalt section dragged on until the early 1950s . The section will help reduce travel time for the La Serena-Santiago route from two days to around eight hours.
Santiago de Chile
On its way through the capital of Chile, the Panamericana becomes the Autopista Central , a privately operated urban highway of a high technological standard. It crosses Santiago de Chile to the north and south on two beams that have been developed as express roads. The length of this section is 60.5 km : 39.6 km as Panamericana and 20.9 km as Avenida General Velásquez . The northern ray (Ruta 5N) from Renca to the center and the southern ray (Ruta 5S) from San Bernardo to the center make it possible to cross the metropolis in 30 minutes in good conditions. The two beams meet at km 0, which is at the underground intersection of Autopista Central and the city's main street, Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins .
Axis north south
This sector is located between the connection between the Panamericana and the Autopista Vespucio Norte Express ( Quilicura commune ) and the extreme northern point of Puente Maipo ( San Bernardo commune ). This includes 49 overpasses and underpasses, 2 bridges, 19 pedestrian bridges and 114 hectares of green space. This axis crosses 11 municipalities.
Axis General Velásquez
This axis extends from 1.7 km south of the Quilicura junction north to the Las Acacias sector over a length of 20.9 km. It is connected to the north-south axis at both ends. These include 32 overpasses and underpasses, ten ditches, two elevated roads, three bridges, six pedestrian bridges and 60 hectares of green space. The most important section of this axis is the underpass under the Alameda del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, which has been in operation since mid-2006. This axis crosses 8 municipalities.
Santiago de Chile - Puerto Montt
From Santiago, the longitudinal axis is called Ruta 5S and is operated by the same company as in Santiago. The route leads almost straight to the Angostura de Paine , where it connects to the Autopista Acceso Sur a Santiago and then changes direction to the southeast at the height of San Francisco de Mostazal . This arch will bypass the city of Rancagua .
The road continues through the Valle Longitudinal through the surroundings of San Fernando , Curicó , Talca , Linares , Parral and Chillán . Then there is the connection with the Autopista del Itata , which connects the city of Concepción to the Panamericana. Next follows the bypass in Salto del Laja , then Los Ángeles and the surroundings of Collipulli , Victoria to Temuco . There is another bypass here that passes close to Mapuche settlements.
At the height of San José de la Mariquina is the northern connection to the city of Valdivia , the southern connection is at Paillaco . The Ruta 5 crosses the eastern sector of Osorno and its three connections: Osorno norte , central (formerly trébol norte ) (connection to the Ruta CH-215 ) and trébol sur (connection to the Ruta U-55 ).
In the further course, the Ruta 5 lines the shores of Lake Llanquihue and ends in Puerto Montt , although the Autopista Ruta del Canal is currently being built. It will continue to the coast of the Canal de Chacao . From Puerto Montt to the southeast the Carretera Austral begins and to the southwest there is a connection to Pargua , from where the ferry goes to the island of Chiloé .
Puerto Montt - Quellón
The section Puerto Montt-Quellón runs for 249.52 km through the Región de los Lagos . It starts at the Cardonal junction and goes over the bypass around Puerto Montt ( Autopista de los Lagos ) to the milestone "Zero" in Punta Lapa in Quellón . The section is completely asphalted, the milestone "zero" also represents the end of the asphalted route 5. This road is under private management of the Rutas del Canal . This sector is also used by ferries to continue a journey on Ruta 5 in the Chiloé archipelago . The Puente Bicentenario bridge over the canal is to replace the ferries here in the future . It should be 2635 m long and would be the longest bridge in South America.
Ruta Panamericana under private operators
From Caldera to Vallenar and from La Serena to Puerto Montt , the Panamericana is operated by private companies, including the motorway that runs in the greater Santiago area and connects the north with the south of the country. The companies that maintain these sections of the Panamericana in Chile are (from north to south):
- Autopistas de Antofagasta : Carmen Alto to Antofagasta (under construction).
- Autopista Valles del Desierto : Caldera to Vallenar .
- Autopista Ruta del Algarrobo : Vallenar to La Serena (under construction).
- Autopista del Elqui : La Serena to Los Vilos .
- Autopista del Aconcagua : Los Vilos to Santiago .
- Autopista Central : Santiago .
- Autopista Ruta del Maipo : Santiago to Talca .
- Autopista Ruta del Maule : Talca to Chillán .
- Autopista del Bosque : Chillán to Collipulli .
- Autopista Ruta de la Araucanía : Collipulli to Gorbea .
- Autopista de los Ríos : Gorbea to Río Bueno and La Unión .
- Autopista de Los Lagos : La Unión and Río Bueno to Puerto Montt .
- Autopista Ruta del Canal : Puerto Montt Pargua (under construction).
Currently, the stretch between Caldera and Vallenar is a modern motorway under the management of the Autopista Valles del Desierto company , while the section between Carmen Alto and Antofagasta still has two lanes under the direction of Autopistas de Antofagasta .
In addition, the Vallenar - La Serena motorway is also run by the Autopista Ruta del Algarrobo (part of the Sacyr group ).
