The Ruta 9 ( RN 9 for short ) is a trunk road in the South American Andean state of Chile . It is called Ruta 9 Longitudinal . The Ruta 9 is located in the south of Chile. It unites the continental zone of the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena from north to south. It rises in the border pass Paso Fronterizo Baguales Oriental at an altitude of 1271 m. It passes Cerro Castillo , Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas , the banks of the Estrecho de Magallanes and finally ends in Fuerte Bulnes , just a few kilometers from Cape Froward , the southernmost point of the South American mainland. It has the status of a national longitudinal axis .
The section from Baguales Oriental Estancia Las Chilenitas is completely unpaved. It is a gravel road from Las Chilenitas to the municipality of Torres del Paine . From the latter to Río Amarillo (in the south of Punta Arenas) it is paved. The section Río Amarillo- Fuerte Bulnes is currently graveled, but is paved.
Significant places along the route are:
