It unites the continental zone of the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena from north to south. It rises in the border pass Paso Fronterizo Baguales Oriental at an altitude of 1271 m. It passes Cerro Castillo , Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas , the banks of the Estrecho de Magallanes and finally ends in Fuerte Bulnes , just a few kilometers from Cape Froward , the southernmost point of the South American mainland. It has the status of a national longitudinal axis .
