The Ruta 31 ( 31-CH for short ) is a national road in the Región de Atacama in the great north of Chile . In its course of 280 km it connects the Ruta 5 Arica-La Serena and the regional capital Copiapó with Argentina via the Paso de San Francisco pass, the region's only navigable border pass.
This trail has remarkable views of some of the highest peaks in Chile: the Nevado Tres Cruces , the Nevado Ojos del Salado , El Muerto and the Incahuasi . It is also an important gateway to the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park and the Laguna Verde .
The route of the Ruta has sections with slopes and curves according to the geographical characteristics of the north of Chile and the Cordilleras ( Codocedo and Río Lama passes ). From the beginning to Diego de Almagro the road is paved, from there the road is gravel.
To the west of the paso internacional pass and on the edge of the Salar de Maricunga is the customs control of San Francisco. After the border, the road is then called RN 60 and continues to Fiambalá , La Rioja and San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca .
The official function of this Ruta was ratified by the MOP in 2000 by Decree Nº 5911 .

- Provincia de Copiapó : Copiapó (km 0-8), connection to Paipote and Tierra Amarilla (km 8), connection to Fundición Paipote (km 9), connection to Estación Chulo (km 24), ruins of Puquios (km 58), La Puerta (km 76), the San Francisco border complex (km 172), police control (during the summer) in Laguna Verde (km 262).
