National roads in Chile

Ruta 60-CH as an example of a national road

The national roads in Chile are the entirety of the country roads that either connect a regional or provincial capital with a longitudinal axis or that have been appointed by the President in accordance with the traffic laws of Chile .

The following criteria are used for a country road:

  • they connect cities with more than 30,000 inhabitants and are important for the region,
  • it is an important international corridor with neighboring countries for South American integration,
  • it enables a connection or access to ports where ships of the Empresa Marítima del Estado regularly arrive,
  • it enables a connection or access to airports where LAN Chile planes regularly land.

A clear example is the Ruta 5 , which is the most important axis in Chilean land transport. It runs from Arica to the Chiloé archipelago and connects the inhabitants from north to south. The Carretera Austral should also be emphasized, which stretches from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins , with many tourist and economic destinations.

Classification of other national roads

Longitudinal axes ( Rutas nacionales longitudinales )

This group includes those streets that have been declared to be the President of the Republic , run in a north-south direction and cross at least two provinces. The streets always keep the numbering on their full length. Numbers from 1 to 9 are reserved for these streets.

International roads ( Rutas nacionales internacionales )

This group includes those roads that connect the country with neighboring countries and have been given the international character within the borders by the President of the Republic . In the numbering of country roads, the number of a road depends on its geographical location. A "CH" is always placed behind the number, such as B. in Ruta 11 as 11-CH .

numbering

In the numbering of rural roads, the number of a road depends on its geographical location. The rule is that if a road extends over two or more regions, the decisive factor is the region that is furthest from the center of the country.
