A predecessor of the Cross of the Seas

Cape Froward (Spanish Cabo Froward ) is the southernmost mainland point in America . The cape is located on Chilean territory on the Brunswick Peninsula in the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena ( Magallanes province , Punta Arenas municipality), 90 km south of Punta Arenas . The drive around Cape Froward is the southernmost point on the Strait of Magellan .

The cape got its name ( English froward , defiant ') in January 1587 from Thomas Cavendish , who named it after the weather conditions with heavy rainfall and winds.

In 1987, a 24 m high metal cross was erected in honor of Pope John Paul II on the 365 m high hill above the cape ( Cruz de los Mares , "Cross of the Seas"). A cross was erected here for the first time as early as 1913, but over the years several crosses fell victim to the weather.

The Patagonia Expedition Race passes Cape Froward.
