Jules Wolff

Jules Wolff (* 25. February 1862 in Puttelange , Lorraine ; † 29. January 1955 in La Chaux-de-Fonds ) was in Switzerland acting rabbi of French nationality .

Life

Family and education

Born in Lorraine, Jules Wolff, son of Isaac Wolff and his wife Ester, née Lambert, studied at the École rabbinique de France in Paris. Jules Wolff married Jenny, the daughter of Rabbi Simon Beyersdorf, in 1895. Wolff died in La Chaux-de-Fonds at the end of January 1955 at the age of 92.

Professional background

Jules Wolff, appointed rabbi after graduating, followed an appointment to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1888. Wolff, who worked there for a period of 60 years, took over the Hebrew subject at the grammar school in 1900 , and in 1943 he retired from this position due to age. In addition, Jules Wolff held a teaching position for Arabic and Syriac at the University of Neuchâtel from 1905 . From 1914 to 1928, he was also rabbi for the municipality of Lausanne .

The convinced pacifist Jules Wolff, co-founder of the local section of the Ligue de la paix et de la liberté, was particularly involved in philanthropic organizations and against anti-Semitism in his region. From 1905 to 1945, Jules Wolff was considered to be the leading Jewish clergyman in western Switzerland .
