Chillán is a city in the middle of the South American Andean state of Chile . It has 164,574 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Chillán is the capital of the Ñuble region , built on September 6, 2018 at 0:00 a.m. by the Chilean XVI. Region. Before that it was the capital of the eponymous province Ñuble, which belonged to the VIII. Region ( Región del Bío-Bío ).

Chillán is located in a wide valley, about halfway between Santiago and Osorno . The city is located around 60 km east of Concepción in the Región del Bío-Bío .

The southern summers are very hot, but it cools down a lot at night.

Chillán was founded on June 25, 1580 by the Governor General of Chile Martín Ruiz de Gamboa under the name San Bartolomé de Gamboa . Earthquakes destroyed Chillán in 1751 and 1835. The city was also often exposed to floods.

Despite its brisk trade, the city was considered unsightly at the end of the 19th century. The population in 1875 was 19,044.

In the earthquake on the night of January 24th to 25th, 1939, more than 25,000 of the 41,000 inhabitants died. The city consists practically only of modern buildings, as the earthquake destroyed almost all historical buildings. Chillán was also affected by the earthquake on February 27, 2010 : 300 prisoners escaped from the damaged prison, some of whom were later arrested.

Attractions

In Chillán there is a small market with handicrafts , fruit and vegetables .

About 80 km further east there is the thermal town ( Termas de Chillán ) with sulphurous thermal baths, near the Chillán volcano at 1800 m.

The region is popular with trekking enthusiasts and skiers . The Andes south-east of the city are particularly romantic.

Famous are the murals by the Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896–1974), which cover the walls of a school library.

The city is the birthplace of Bernardo O'Higgins , the first Supremo Director of Chile, and Claudio Arraus (museum).

The Arturo Prat Museum is dedicated to the Chilean sea hero of the same name, who died in the Saltpeter War in 1879.

Wine is grown in the region . There is also some tourism . The city lies on the Panamericana . The city's airport is located a few kilometers northeast of Chillán.
