Linares is a city in the center of Chile in the Región del Maule . It has 93,602 inhabitants (as of 2017). There are many famous Chilean politicians, poets, writers and musicians who were born in the city. Nowadays the city is the center of trade, agriculture and services.
geography
Linares is about 303 km south of the capital Santiago and about 50 km south of Talca , the capital of the region. The municipality of Linares has 83,249 inhabitants and an area of 1,466 km², with the capital Linares and many other villages and towns.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm summers, although winters are a bit cold and rainy.
history
The city was founded on May 23, 1794 as Villa de San Ambrosio de Linares by Ambrosio O'Higgins . Ambrosio O'Higgins was the father of the first Supremo Director of Chile, Bernardo O'Higgins . He stopped in Linares on April 13, 1813 before he went to the Battle of Rancagua and the Battle of Maipú .
On January 24, 1939 and February 27, 2010 , the province of Linares was hit by severe earthquakes .
Attractions
Everywhere in the city there are colonial-style houses alongside modern buildings . The Iglesia Parroquial Corazón de María is a national monument, as is the Museo de Arte y Artesanía Nacional . Linares is the seat of a Catholic diocese . The remarkable San Ambrosio Cathedral in Linares is considered one of the most beautiful church buildings of the 20th century. It was built in the Romanesque style, based on the model of the Ambrose Basilica in Milan .
There are several thermal springs around the city, such as Termas de Panimávida and Termas de Quinamávida . The lake Lago Colbún with its 3.8 km² is about 32 km north of Linares. Near the town is the village of Rari, where colorful knitwear made from horse hair is sold.
Linares is a starting point for excursions into the rural idyll of the region or a national park in the Andes .
economy
Wine and fruit are grown on a large scale around Linares . The sugar industry plays an important role. The city lies on the Panamericana .
The airport ( IATA : ZLR, ICAO : SCLN) is located to the east of the city, about 4 km from the city center .
