Curicó is a city in the middle of the South American Andean state of Chile . It belongs to the Región del Maule and has 126,092 inhabitants (as of April 16, 2017).
The name Curicó comes from the Mapudungun language and means black water ( Curi = black; Co = water).

Curicó is located in central Chile, about 194 km south of Santiago in the Región del Maule (Region VII).

The day and night temperatures fluctuate relatively strongly. This creates ideal conditions for some grape varieties. The climate is Mediterranean.
history
Curicó was founded on October 9, 1743 under the name San José de Buena Vista by José Antonio Manso de Velasco . In 1830 the city received its city rights.
The Iglesia San Francisco church was built in 1731 and moved to its current location in 1758.
The earthquake on February 27, 2010 destroyed 90% of the historic city center and thus almost 60% of the entire city.
tourism
Every year between March 15th and 20th the city celebrates a big wine festival, the 'Fiesta de la Vendimia'. The region has its own wine route, the Ruta del Vino en el Valle de Curicó .
Potrero Grande is about 30 km from Curicó. A hilly area ideal for hiking and camping with large forests and waterfalls. The rivers around Curicó are popular with trekking enthusiasts.

The region around Curicó has developed into a considerable wine-growing region . Curicó is also important as a fruit- growing area.
