The Río Mataquito is a river in the Chilean Región del Maule .

It arises twelve kilometers west of Curicó from the confluence of the Río Lantué and Río Teno . Flowing in a westerly direction, it crosses the coastal cordillera in a wide valley and flows into the Pacific Ocean in the seaside resort of Iloca in the municipality of Licantén .

In the catchment area of the Río Mataquito, which also includes the two rivers Río Lantué and Río Teno, there is a Mediterranean climate with a six-month dry period. The annual mean temperature is 19 ° C, with a minimum of 7 ° C and a maximum of 30 ° C. The annual rainfall is 740 mm.

The name Mataquito probably comes from the Mapudungun , composed of matha (mark) and cutún (to squeeze out), so means something like "to squeeze out the pith".
