geography

The longitudinal valley begins roughly at the latitude of Santiago de Chile (32 ° S) and dips into the sea at Puerto Montt (41 ° 30'S), where it continues submarine over the island of Chiloé to the Taitao peninsula (43 ° S). However, its tectonic structure already stands out in the canals from 47 ° S. The southern section between Temuco and Puerto Montt is characterized by a diverse range of glacial shapes. In the east there is a chain of volcanoes that is the cause of many earthquakes. To her belongs z. B. the Tupungato volcano .

The flat hilly landscape between the Río Aconcagua and the Río Bío Bío forms one of the most important agricultural areas in Chile, especially the Chilean wine-growing is strong here. The landscape was created by glacial and fluvial erosion . South of the island of Chiloé is a distinct chain of islands, the Chonos Archipelago , part of the southern coastal cordillera . To the east of it lies a landscape rich in fjords with the Taitao peninsula .

The Central Valley has a length of around 960 km and a width between 40 and 80 km.
