Vallenar is a city in Chile in the Región de Atacama . It has around 51,917 inhabitants (as of 2017).

geography

Vallenar is located 145 km south of the city of Copiapó and is the capital of the province of Huasco . The city is located on the Río Huasco at an altitude of around 380 m.

The climate is very dry and desert-like (31 mm rain / year).

history

Vallenar was founded on January 5th, 1789 by the Irishman Ambrosio O'Higgins . Ambrosio O'Higgins was the father of the first Supremo Director of Chile, Bernardo O'Higgins .

On November 10, 1922 , the city was badly damaged by a very severe earthquake .

Attractions

The Llanos de Challe (National Park) with its 457 km² is located 60 km northwest of the city . The national park offers the typical flora and fauna of the desert-like environment (e.g. cacti , many species of birds , guanacos and reptiles ). The national reserve Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt lies 48 km to the southwest . With its 8.5 km² it is very small and lies on the Pacific. Here you can watch Humboldt penguins .

The city itself is criss-crossed by avenues of palm trees and historic buildings. The Museo de Huasco shows the regional history.

economy

The city lives mainly from agriculture and mining ( iron ore ). Tourism also plays an important role. There are a number of wine-growing areas around the city . Agriculture depends heavily on the water supply from the Río Huasco . In the south of the great lies Santa Juana - Reservoir .
