The Weyermannshaus from a bird's eye view

The Weyermannshaus , bern German diminutive Weyerli ( " Weiherchen "), is a swimming pool in the west of the city of Bern . Measured by the water surface of the main pool of 16,000  square meters , it is the largest open-air swimming pool in Switzerland, and measured by the volume of 25,000 cubic meters, the largest in Western Europe . It also consists of an indoor swimming pool , a restaurant and an ice rink . The systems are operated separately.

Geographical location

The Weyermannshaus outdoor pool is part of Bern-Bethlehem , more precisely to the Untermatt district . Historically, it belongs to the former Gut Weyermannshaus, from which today's industrial area of the same name arose. The bath is located directly to the west of the motorway - viaduct "Weyermannshaus" of the A12 , beyond that is the industrial area. The Bremgartenwald is to the north of the spa, to the west of Bern's district VI and to the south is the Stöckacker district . The geographic focus of the municipality of Bern is just east of the main basin.

Historical development

On March 1, 1235, Heinrich von Hohenstaufen gave Peter von Bubenberg , the former mayor of Bern , a “pond or lake a little outside the city” (“ vivarium sive lacum nostrum situm ante civitatem ”) as a fief . Over a hundred years later, on August 14, 1338, the city of Bern again sold the incumbent mayor, Hans von Bubenberg, a piece of Allmend to the "wyer von Bubenberg". It can be assumed that both meant the pond, which was in what is now the Weyermann region. The name of the property is likely to be derived from the seat of the administrator of this body of water: the house of the pond man.

In the 16th century there were three ponds in the same place, which were created by artificially dividing the original pond, but were still connected to each other. These three ponds were used for fishing, in which they were drained every three years . In 1620, permanent drainage of the ponds began. The former bottom of the ponds was then used for agriculture. The western part of the westernmost pond was excluded from this. From 1908 to 1910 it was set up as a bathing establishment - at that time still in its natural state.

An extension to the municipal outdoor pool took place at the end of the 1950s. The edge of the pool was concreted in 1957, and various buildings were built under the direction of the architect Hans Beyeler: the main building with the caretaker's apartment, a restaurant and one of today's three cloakrooms. In 1970 the indoor pool and the artificial ice rink including cloakrooms, a new restaurant and additional cloakrooms for the outdoor pool followed.

outdoor pool

The main pool of the Weyermannshaus: In front the swimming lanes and the diving boards, in the back right the children's area, in the middle the Inseli

The center of the outdoor pool is the pool, with an area of 16,000 square meters and a circumference of 460 meters. It is surrounded by around 32,000 square meters of lawn , a children's playground , a sports field, cloakroom facilities, three toddler pools, table tennis tables , a bowling green and a restaurant with a satellite kiosk . The pool itself has a lane area with eight swimming lanes each fifty meters long, a diving platform with a one-meter and three-meter diving board and a children's area with a reduced depth. A prominent feature of the basin is the island standing on pillars (the "Inseli") in the middle.

In 2012 it became known that the outdoor pool was in need of renovation. It no longer complies with water protection regulations and loses a third of the water supplied to it by seeping away . As of June 2019, however, the outdoor pool has still not been renovated and the water still flows untreated, i.e. including the chlorine , into the Wohlensee . It is expected that in autumn 2020, those entitled to vote will be able to vote on a corresponding construction loan of CHF 48 million.

Like all other outdoor pools in the city of Bern (with the exception of Ka-We-De ), entry to the Weyermannshaus outdoor pool is free.

Indoor swimming pool

The entrance of the indoor pool

The Weyermannshaus indoor swimming pool was built in 1970 with a teaching and a lane swimming pool (five lanes of 25 meters each), a one-meter and a three-meter diving board.

From 1993 to 1995 the swimming pool technology was refurbished and the pool and the ceiling in the swimming pool hall were renewed. The room was adapted to the current earthquake safety standards.

From 2010 to 2011, the indoor pool was renovated and rebuilt for 9.8 million francs : the entrance area, the cloakrooms and the wet areas were completely redesigned, with the whole building being designed to be handicapped accessible and wheelchair accessible. It also meets the requirements of the Minergie-ECO standard. The pre-existing solarium was removed for health reasons and a gymnastics room was integrated. The sauna , the steam bath and the relaxation room have been redesigned so that entry is possible independently of the actual indoor pool. The cloakrooms and shower cubicles, which were strictly separated by gender until the renovation, have also been redesigned so that mixed use is now possible.

The pool has also been barrier-free since spring 2012 . It has a hydraulically operated lift that disabled people can use to enter the water independently.

rink

Winter use

The Weyermannshaus ice rink, which is used as a tennis court in summer

The ice rink with a field of 60 by 75 meters was built together with the indoor swimming pool. The field can be divided by boards , usually into two ice skating and one ice hockey rink . The Weyermannshaus artificial ice rink has been the home of the EHC Rot-Blau Bern-Bümpliz since the 1971/1972 season, and SC Bern uses the facility for training young people.

In 2014 the Weyermannshaus ice rink was the first ice rink to provide so-called ice gliders. This is a steel plate with runners for wheelchairs, which enables disabled people to move around on the ice despite wheelchairs. Invented the Eisgleiter by former German was luger Hans Rinn .

Summer use

In the years after the rebuilding of the ice rink, it was first used as a parking lot in the summer for reasons of space . In later years, alternative uses were added: Most of the time, the facility served as a tennis court, and later also as a beach soccer field. 2013 was the council of the city of Bern announced that a summer use because of the poor condition of the concrete runway'm no longer in question and the place had to be urgently rehabilitated. The cooling pipes are old and brittle. A renovation is planned for 2017.
