Niederwangen is a village in the Swiss canton of Bern . With around 1900 inhabitants, the settlement is the seventh largest of 22 districts in the municipality of Köniz , which is immediately south of the Swiss federal city of Bern . Niederwangen is located around three kilometers west of the main town of Köniz on Autobahn 12 .

history

Niederwangen is characterized by agriculture. The well-known boys' home "Auf der Grube" had existed on one of the estates since 1825 , and was closed in 2012 after allegations of abuse.

In 1924 the first post office was built in Niederwangen. There had been a mailbox since 1833, which had been closed and reopened several times. The post office location was moved several times during the 20th century. In 1994 the post office moved into its current office on Freiburgstrasse in Niederwangen (as of April 2017).

Ried development

The agricultural areas with the field name Ried east of Niederwangen form the largest settlement project in the greater Bern area. More than 1,000 rental and owner-occupied apartments are to be built by 2028. The reed near Niederwangen is a semicircular area of ​​around 30 hectares , which is bordered in the east by a wooded hill used as a recreation area, which is also the location of the Tubentränki viewpoint .

In autumn 2007 the municipality of Köniz announced a planning competition for the development of the area. The competition met with international interest, with the participation of a total of 35 planning teams from Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Portugal. The three best-placed designs envisage a development for more than 2000 residents, which means that Niederwangen's population would more than double within a very short time.

In a referendum on June 17, 2012, the change to the Niederwangen, Ried (East) building regulations was approved. According to the voting book, an architecture project competition for the first construction phase will be launched after the building regulations have been approved. Construction began in 2016.
