High altar in the Magni Church by Jenner and Vetten

Matthäus Heinrich Vetten (* in Braunschweig probably; † unknown) was a German sculptor and carver of the baroque in Braunschweig.

Life

Von Vetten is known to have worked as a journeyman in the Braunschweig workshop of the important sculptor Anton Detlev Jenner . After Jenner's death on June 26, 1732, he continued to run the business and work on the high altar of the Magni Church , and on November 11, 1732, he married Jenner's widow. This happened so quickly that the ducal consistory had to be asked for permission. In addition to a daughter, the marriage resulted in a son Anton Georg, who had to be buried for free in 1752 because the father, who was obliged to pay, had either left the city or the family. Vetten may have gone bankrupt in 1745, because a "Matheus Heinrich Vetten" is mentioned in the Braunschweig advertisements in October 1745 in connection with bankruptcy proceedings . His wife died in 1771.

Works

On the high altar of the Magnikirche in Braunschweig, it is not possible to determine which works are by Jenner and which by Vetten. Based on the distribution of the monetary payments made, it is assumed that more than half of the sculptures were created by Vetten. Two other works by Vetten are attested: the tomb of the Brunswick Duke Ludwig Rudolf († March 1, 1735) and his wife Christine Luise († November 12, 1747), which originally stood in the Brunswick Cathedral, and also the crucified Christ on the sarcophagus the tin coffins of the duke couple. The second work is the high altar of the Riddagshausen monastery church . The carved wood work has two floors, with two floors of different heights with Corinthian columns. On the lower floor there is the relief of the Last Supper and on the upper floor the crucified Christ between Mary and John. Two evangelists rest on each floor on the entablature. The Evangelists are Vetten's most successful work, otherwise Vetten's performance cannot compete with Jenner's.
