Culture

In the middle of Wabern is the Bernau culture and neighborhood center . The Villa Bernau dates from the time when the Bernese patricians liked to spend the summer months on their campaigns . In 1890 the chemist Georg Wander , founder of the company Wander AG ( Ovaltine ), bought the house for himself and his family. As a result, Wander made outstanding contributions to the development of Wabern as an entrepreneur and as a private individual. In 1979/80 the Villa Bernau threatened to have to give way to a shopping center. However, the project met with widespread rejection from the Waber population. Thanks to the commitment of some Waberer, the property was spared demolition and instead included in the inventory of protected buildings. The municipality of Köniz subsequently supported efforts to publicly use the property. Today the Bernau is administered by a sponsoring association. The aim of the association is to take up and support socio-cultural ideas, projects and needs of the people of Waber, to create space for them and to help them to become reality. The villa offers a wide range of courses and cultural events, there is a bistro on the ground floor and the premises can be rented for private parties.

At the foot of the local mountain, Gurten, there is also the inclusive culture and gastro eatery, Hehre Fahne - the idealist box . Culture, theater and gastronomy come together here in a social context and are intended to enrich one another. The inclusive character of the place is characterized by the cooperation and openness of projects for people with and without disabilities, people with a migration background, children and adolescents, people with psychological challenges, as well as people who are in socially difficult or dependent situations.
