Benjamin Lüthi (born November 30, 1988 ) is a former Swiss football player .

Career

Benjamin Lüthi comes from the talent factory of FC Thun . On July 20, 2003, the midfielder, who prefers to play on the right wing, joined the Bernese Oberland club. At first he successfully passed through all junior stations up to the U-21. For example, he won the U-19 championship title with his teammates in the 2004/05 season. On July 29, 2006, Lüthi made his debut for the first team in the Axpo Super League , the top Swiss division. In the game against Grasshopper Club Zurich he was substituted on in the 57th minute. The then 17-year-old, who to this day is said to have a healthy level of aggressiveness , saw the first yellow card of his professional career just four minutes later. In late summer he suffered a serious injury for the first time. In one game there was a collision with another player and Lüthi was left unconscious with a concussion and a blood clot in his brain.

Under the then coach Heinz Peischl , Lüthi played three more games in the Super League in 2006/07. Under Peischl's successor René van Eck , the young player had a hard time at first, also due to further injuries. During the 2007/08 season, the midfielder only made six championship appearances for the first team and increasingly reinforced the U-21s.

A difficult phase for the Bernese Oberland Association followed suddenly. Although FC Thun played the Cup semi-final against FC Basel on February 27, 2008 , they lost it as well as the fight against the looming, forced relegation to the second-highest division. So it came about that FC Thun took part in the Challenge League from the 2008/09 season .

In this season Benjamin Lüthi was part of the team. In the summer of 2009 he was injured and was out for two months, but was then used again regularly and even developed into one of the top performers in the second half of 2009/10. The Bernese Oberland club won the Challenge League in 2010 and was promoted to the Axpo Super League , thanks in part to Lüthi's achievements .

Lüthi's contract, which originally ran until 2011, was extended early to 2013 at the end of May 2010.

From January 2015 he was under contract with the Grasshopper Club Zurich .

In December 2016, Lüthi announced the end of his career at the age of 28.
