Bottom of water

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The interface between the free body of water in a body of water and the strongly water-saturated solid body underlying and surrounding the body of water is referred to as the body of water . The bottom of the water body can consist of solid rock ("bare rock") or a loose sediment (in English also referred to as the sediment-water interface ). In ecology, the bottom of the water is one of the substrates that certain living beings serve as a habitat. In a newly created aquatic ecosystem, it is the first and only substrate available for colonization. The part of an aquatic ecosystem that lives in or on the water floor is called benthos .

The bottom of the water body is excluded from the definition of the term soil and therefore does not fall under the Federal Soil Protection Act (BBodSchG). Rather, the water bed is indirectly protected by the Water Resources Act (WHG).
