The Kirchenfeldbrücke connects the Casinoplatz in the old town of Bern across the Aare with the Helvetiaplatz in the Kirchenfeld district .

history

In 1881, the Berne Land Company Ltd. was established in London . founded with the purpose of buying the Kirchenfeld, developing it as a residential area and connecting it to the existing part of the city of Bern with a bridge.

The bridge was built by engineers Moritz Probst and Jules Röthlisberger from the metal construction company Gottlieb Ott & Cie. Designed in Bern as a hingeless arch bridge in a riveted welded iron construction, erected in 21 months and inaugurated on September 24, 1883. It was only the third bridge of this type in Switzerland. Previously, the Javroz Bridge near Charmey and the Schwarzwasser Bridge between Bern and Schwarzenburg BE were built in the same design. Because of the funding from the English development company, the bridge was popularly known as the English Bridge until the end of the 19th century .

In 1901 the bridge was given the first tram track for the electrically powered line III, which ran between Breitenrain and Burgernziel.

In 1913 and 1914, the bridge had to be reinforced so that a second tram track could be installed. The construction should also be reinforced so that it vibrates less. From the beginning, vertical vibrations were noticeable, which were mainly stimulated by horses at a trot . Vibrations in the horizontal direction were stimulated by pedestrians walking in step . To improve the structure, the main pillars were sheathed with reinforced concrete and the roadway above the main pillars was separated to make the structure more statically definite. The original iron roadway was replaced by a reinforced concrete slab with a wooden covering.

In the 1960s it was felt that the bridge would have to be replaced in the foreseeable future in order to be able to cope with the increasing auto tourism.

Building

The Kirchenfeld Bridge is 229 m long and has two arches with a span of 78 m and a crown height of 32 m. Around 1,300 t of steel were used for the structure, the roadway weighs a further 2,300 t. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 rivets are installed on the bridge.

In 1968 guardrails were installed and in 1972 the cast iron parapets were replaced by light metal ones. 55 cm of the original railing are still present across from the Kunsthalle . This is due to a night and fog action by Kurt Moritz Gossenreiter, which was subsequently taken over by the authorities.

From April to October 2018, extensive renovation and reinforcement measures were implemented on the bridge structure.

Safety measures

Since numerous people have already committed suicide by jumping from the Kirchenfeld Bridge , including Hans Eggimann , information boards from the telephone counseling organization Die Dargebotene Hand were first attached to the bridgeheads .

After an accumulation of suicides in 2009 with traumatized eyewitnesses, the city decided to provisionally secure the railings above Aarestrasse and the sports field with a three-meter-high wire mesh fence. The fence was replaced in 2015 by safety nets, like the one on the cathedral platform.

Mentions in the literature

The novel Night Train to Lisbon ( filmed in 2013 ) by the Bernese philosopher and writer Pascal Mercier , published in 2004, begins with a prevented suicide on the bridge.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt mentioned the Kirchenfeld Bridge several times. In the story Die Brücke on October 15, 1943, the fictional FD gets "lost in thought on the bridge and under the meteor".

The Kirchenfeld Bridge also appears again and again in Friedrich Glauser's work ; his sergeant Studer crosses it.

Carl Jacob Burckhardt described in a memory how a friend almost threw him over the old cast-iron railing of the Kirchenfeld Bridge when he was young.

Verena Stefan stated in the novel Fremdschläfer that when walking across the Kirchenfeldbrücke you shouldn't look back, otherwise you couldn't take a step. "You would be compressed by the condensate Bern."
