ESRI Inc. ( E nvironmental S ystem R esearch I nstitute ) is an American software developer of geographic information systems (GIS). Headquartered in Redlands , California and wholly privately owned, the company was founded in 1969 by Jack Dangermond, who is still president of the company today. ESRI employs around 3,100 people in the United States and has annual sales of around 794 million US dollars. The company has ten commercial offices in the United States and another 80 worldwide.

The main products are geographic information systems and are grouped under the name ArcGIS as one product family each for the server and desktop area. ArcGIS Desktop essentially comprises the products ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo (in the components ArcMap and ArcCatalog) as well as ArcReader and ArcGIS Explorer. The ArcGIS Server product family , on the other hand, is made up of the ArcGIS Server in various editions (expansion stages), the ArcIMS and the ArcSDE as the central data storage component.

The native file formats of this product group are represented by Shapefile , Arc / Info Coverage and, since the introduction of ArcGIS, essentially the ESRI Geodatabase . ESRI stands u. a. in competition with Autodesk , Intergraph , Manifold , Smallworld and MapInfo .

The official distributor for Germany and Switzerland is ESRI Deutschland GmbH in Kranzberg and ESRI Schweiz AG in Switzerland. Until July 1, 2009, ESRI Deutschland GmbH traded as ESRI Geoinformatik GmbH and ESRI Schweiz AG as ESRI Geoinformatik AG. ESRI software and a number of associated services such as training, consulting, implementation, customization, software-as-a-service (rental, hosting) are still available through a network of authorized specialist dealers.
