MapInfo Professional is a geographic information system - software (GIS) of the US company MapInfo Corporation . The program is used to collect, edit, analyze, visualize and present geographical data.

File formats

The import and export interface format is the Map Info Interchange Format ( MIF / MID ). The data storage in the program itself takes place in the TAB / DAT / ID / MAP format and is referred to as a relation or tab file. Also raster data can be read. These are georeferenced using a TAB file that assigns coordinates to certain pixels in the image.

Mapbasic

The programming language MapBasic, a programming language similar to BASIC , is offered as a development environment for your own applications . In order to get an adapted working environment or to facilitate routine processes, Mapinfo can also be supplemented with your own applications via its interface for object-oriented languages ​​such as VB, DELPHI or C ++.

MapInfo Corporation

The manufacturing company MapInfo Corporation was founded in 1986 and is one of the largest software manufacturers of geographic information systems (GIS) worldwide. It was taken over in April 2007 by the office machine manufacturer Pitney Bowes , where it forms the software subsidiary Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) with its sister company Group 1 Software .
