Pitney Bowes is a United States company headquartered in Stamford , Connecticut . The company was founded in 1920 and is listed on the S&P 500 on the New York Stock Exchange .

Pitney Bowes is the world's largest manufacturer of franking machines and postal products. Pitney Bowes also provides postal services and software in the field of geographic information systems ( MapInfo ), document preparation and data integration. Pitney Bowes today holds over 3,500 patents.

The company owes its name to the two founders and inventors of the franking machine, Arthur Pitney and Walter Bowes. In 1920, thanks to their efforts, the first letter was franked and sent by franking machine. This letter was addressed to Bowes' wife.
