history
The name Weissenbühl is derived from a former Weissenbühl estate, which was located here until the development in 1904. Construction activity in the area began as early as 1865, but did not concentrate until around 1890. In 1890 the private horse-drawn bus line Bärenplatz-Mattenhof-Weissenbühl-Kleinwabern and in 1894 the steam tramway on the same line to Grosswabern were set up, which brought the area closer to the city.
Facilities
The Zieglerspital , which opened in 1869 and also housed the Geriatric University Clinic, was located in the Weissenbühl area until it closed in 2015 . The hospital had 228 beds (including a geriatric university clinic). A residential complex is to be built on the site. There is currently an asylum center there. The Tram Museum in Weissenbühl opened on September 19, 2007 .
In 2007 a beach volleyball center was opened in Weissenbühl .
In 2009 and 2011 the beach volleyball amateur Swiss championships were held in Weissenbühl.
From 1900 to 1937 the production facility of Wander AG was in Weissenbühl, where, among other things, Ovaltine was manufactured from 1904 onwards.
Transport infrastructure
The main traffic arteries of the quarter are the Seftigenstrasse and the Morillonstrasse . The district is connected to the city center by the tram lines 3 and 9 as well as the bus lines 10 and 19 from Bernmobil and has a BLS AG train station opened in 1901 with the Gürbetalbahn on the Bern - Belp - Thun route (Gürbetallinie). On November 1, 1999, a regional train collided with an express train at this station, killing two people and injuring over 50 people.
Miscellaneous
The quarter gave the song "Wyssebüehl" on the album "Polovinyl" by Polo Hofer its title.
The Villa Stucki offers space for a restaurant, private events and a district club center.
