history

New hospital legislation has been in force in the canton of Bern since January 1, 2007 . All district and regional hospitals are now assigned to regional hospital groups and the hospital associations as the previous sponsors of the hospitals have been dissolved.

The result is seven regional hospital centers RSZ, which are responsible for basic medical care and emergency care in their regions and have service mandates. Legally, the hospital centers belong to the Canton of Bern, but they are structured as a stock corporation and run as independent companies. The cantonal amounts that were used to compensate for hospital deficits in the past no longer apply; the services of the RSZ are now remunerated within the framework of specified values.

At the beginning of 2016, Spital Netz Bern merged with Bern's Inselspital to form the new Insel Gruppe AG.
