The Ziegler Hospital was a public hospital in the Weissenbühl district in the south of the Swiss city of Bern and was located adjacent to Wabern, Spiegel bei Bern and Liebefeld (municipality of Köniz). It was founded in 1869 and ceased operations at the end of August 2015. The hospital provided basic and emergency medical care for parts of the city of Bern as well as for the communities of Köniz and Schwarzenburg BE and was closely networked with the respective local family doctors. The Ziegler Hospital also housed the geriatric university clinic.

history

The merchant Georg Emanuel Ludwig Ziegler , who died in 1867, bequeathed his fortune of 1.7 million Swiss francs to the city of Bern with the aim of building a hospital for poor but well-reputed residents, inmates and citizens . Part of this legacy was Campagne Bellevue , which he acquired in 1858. After the Ziegler Foundation was established in 1868, hospital operations began in Bellevue.

In 1881 the Campagne was given an extension by the architect Eduard von Rodt . Further extensions took place in 1951 with the Renferhaus, the nurses' house in 1957 as well as the high-rise beds and the staff house in 1976. The hospital operations were separated from the Zieglerstiftung in 1979 and taken over by the Bern Hospital Association. The hospital association was merged into Spital Netz Bern AG in 2007 , whose board of directors has been identical to the board of trustees of the Inselspital Foundation since 2012 .

The Ziegler Hospital ceased operations at the end of August 2015. It is to be replaced by a new city hospital on the area of the Tiefenauspital . A federal reception and processing center for up to 350 asylum seekers was set up in the building of the previous Ziegler Hospital in spring 2016 for a maximum of eight years for temporary use until the site was rebuilt.
