Münsingen ( French Munisenges , Bern German Münsige ) is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . The municipality is located between the cities of Bern and Thun in the Aare valley . history

Münsingen emerged from a Celtic village, which 400 BC. Was settled at this point. In 1904 the grave field of Münsingen-Rain from the Latène period was discovered. Various remains of the wall date from Roman times . In 1941 a bathing building with wall paintings and a mosaic floor (fish and Oceanus head) was excavated south of the church around 200 AD. The bath house probably belonged to a Roman estate .

The origin of today's place name is not clear, but is attributed to the Alemanni . Until 1033 Münsingen belonged to the Burgundian royal court. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Münsingen was under the rule of the Knights Senn, from whom the current municipal coat of arms comes. Its best-known representative was the Basel Bishop Johann Senn von Münsingen († 1365), during his tenure a. a. the earthquake in Basel (1356) severely damaged the city and the surrounding area.

In 1406 the city of Bern bought the rights of the Landgraviate of Burgundy from Counts Berchtold and Egon von Neu-Kyburg . Münsingen thus came under the sovereignty of the city. Bern divided the area to the left and right of the Aare into four regional courts, the Sternenberg , Zollikofen , Konolfingen and Seftigen regional courts . Münsingen belonged to the Konolfingen district court . Some landowners who became Ausburger of Bern still had the high level of jurisdiction, the blood ban, as in Münsingen. Bern gradually sought to acquire high jurisdiction in such dominions. To make out of this desire of the city to acquire the blood spell, and from the refusal of the government gentlemen, this right and other rights to wrest that stemmed Twingherrenstreit . At that time (1470) the high jurisdiction of Münsingen passed to the city of Bern.

Münsingen made history as an important meeting place in the 19th century during the democratization process in the canton of Bern , for example with the people's assembly on January 10, 1831 in the Münsingen church , in which the assembly called for a constitutional council to be convened to create a new, liberal cantonal constitution. This resolution resulted in the abdication of the patrician restoration government and the formation of a liberal government.

In 1895 a cantonal “insane asylum” was founded in Münsingen, which is now called the Münsingen Psychiatry Center . The best-known inmate was the Swiss writer Friedrich Glauser , who rules Matto in his detective novels, among others , and who processed the psychiatric conditions of the 1920s in literary terms.

In 2012 it was decided to incorporate the Trimstein community into the Münsingen community on January 1, 2013, followed by the Tägertschi community on January 1, 2017 .
