Seftigen is a municipality in the Thun administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Seftigen lies at 578  m above sea level. M. , 7.5 km west-northwest of the city of Thun (linear distance). The village extends in a wide basin on the extreme southern edge of the heights of the Belpberg between the valley plains of the Gürbe in the west and the Aare in the east, on the border with the Bernese Oberland .

The area of the municipal area of 3.9 km² comprises a section of the wide Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The central part of the community is occupied by a valley furrow, which ensures a relatively flat connection from the central Gürbetal to the Aare valley. This valley separates the mountain (at 696  m above sea level, the highest point of Seftigen) in the north, which geographically belongs to the heights of the Belpberg, from the height of Widerhueb (up to 673  m above sea level ) in the south, which is the Moraine landscape of the Thun West Office is assigned. In the far east, the area extends to the edge of the Limpach valley , which opens up to the Aare.

To the west, the municipality extends into the agriculturally intensively used plain of the middle Gürbe valley, which is here at an altitude of 560  m above sea level. M. lies. The canalized Müsche flows through the plain in the area of Seftigen . In the west, the municipal boundary runs along a dirt road, which is roughly in the middle of the approximately 1.5 km wide valley floor. In 1997, 15% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 16% for forests and woodlands and 68% for agriculture; a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Seftigen includes the Allmend settlement ( 567  m above sea level ) in the middle of the Gürbetal level at Burgistein-Wattenwil train station, as well as various individual farms. Seftigen's neighboring communities are Kirchdorf , Uetendorf , Gurzelen and Burgistein .

history

Individual finds from Roman times prove a very early settlement of the municipality of Seftigen. The first written mention of the place took place in 1244 under the name Seftinges . Later the names Softinges (1254), Sophtigen (1276), Seftingen (1277) and Sofftingun (1295) appeared. The etymology of the place name is in the dark.

In the Middle Ages , Seftigen belonged to the Lords of Burgistein. Later there were several changes of ownership: The village rulership was successively incumbent on the Münzer, von Wattenwyl and von Graffenried families; the upper hospital in Bern also had rights in the village. Under Bern rule, Seftigen became the center of the Seftigen district court from 1388 , which lasted until 1798. The Seftigen district court was one of the four Old Bernese district courts and included the area of today's Seftigen district and the western part of the Thun district. In 1714 numerous houses were affected by a fire.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Seftigen belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Seftigen District Office, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. However, the official seat was moved from Seftigen to Belp in 1803. In earlier times the village was parish after Kirchdorf. In 1664 it was assigned to the neighboring church of Gurzelen. The church Rödel was destroyed in the fire of the church in Kirchdorf in 1871.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It lies on the main road from Thun to Schwarzenburg or through the Gürbetal to Bern . The closest connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun) is around 6 km from the town center. On August 14, 1901, the Gürbetalbahn from Bern to the Burgistein-Wattenwil station (half of it in the Seftigen municipality) was put into operation. Around a year later, on November 1, 1902, the continuation to Thun opened with the Seftigen train station in the center of the village.
