Heiligenschwendi is a municipality in the Thun administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

The place lies above the right bank of Lake Thun on the western slope of the heavily wooded hill Blume . The most important settlements are Schwendi-Dörfli , Heiligenschwendi and Halt . A little less than half (exactly 48.8%) of the entire municipal area of ​​555 ha is used for agriculture. Another 43.4% is covered by forest and wood and only 7.4% is settlement area.

population

At the beginning of 2006 the community had 704 inhabitants. Of these, 600 (= 87.65%) were Swiss citizens and 104 were foreigners.

The community president is Christian Zwahlen (as of 2016).

The voting shares of the parties at the 2015 National Council election were: SVP 47.2%, SP 12.2%, EVP 11.0%, BDP 9.1%, EDU 5.9%, GPS 4.6%, glp 4.2 %, FDP 4.1%, CVP 0.7%.

The most important employer is the Bern Rehabilitation Center Heiligenschwendi , which opened in 1895 (originally a tuberculosis sanatorium; today a rehabilitation clinic for pulmonary, cardiac and musculoskeletal diseases).

The Heiligenschwendi barrier was opened to the public in 2014 as a military-historical monument of national importance.

Spycherweg

The Spycherweg is a 6.45 to 9.15 km long hiking trail through the municipality of Heiligenschwendi, which can be hiked in 2½ to 3½ hours. Up until the 19th century, the Spycher or granary served as a store for threshed grain in grain boxes and other food supplies such as dried fruit and vegetables. Information boards attached to the granaries provide information about the rustic wooden houses in connection with the guides available free of charge in hotels, in the tourist information office or on the Internet.
