Thomas Zurbuchen
Thomas Hansueli Zurbuchen (* 1968 in Switzerland ) is a Swiss-American astrophysicist . He has been NASA's director of science since October 2016 . He was previously Professor of Space Research and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan .
Life
Zurbuchen grew up in Heiligenschwendi on the right bank of Lake Thun and studied physics with a minor in mathematics at the University of Bern , where he also received his doctorate in experimental astrophysics in 1996 . He then moved to the University of Michigan as a research assistant , where he was full professor from 2008. Since October 3, 2016, he became the first Swiss director of science at NASA. In 2018 he received the Heinrich Greinacher Prize .
Zurbuchen is married with two children, and is also a citizen of the United States . He lives near Washington, DC
