Parish before the merger on January 1, 2014

Until December 31, 2013, Niederstocken was a political municipality in the Thun administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . On January 1, 2014 Niederstocken merged with the former municipalities of Höfen bei Thun and Oberstocken to form the new municipality of Stocken-Höfen .

In addition to the former municipality Niederstocken still exists under the same name, a civic community .

Names

The name Niederstocken goes back to the Old High German generic word stoc (tree trunk, tree trunk) . In place and field names this is how clearings are called. The qualifier Nieder serves to differentiate the Oberstocken of the same name . First historical mention in 1309 when "von der burg ze Stocken" was mentioned.

geography

Niederstocken is located in the Bernese Oberland in the Alps in the Stockental . The neighboring communities from the north, starting clockwise, were Höfen , Reutigen , Erlenbach im Simmental and Oberstocken until December 31, 2013 . The village is located at the foot of a wooded northern slope and is traversed by the Feusibach , which merges below the village with the Fluhbach coming from the Stockenfluh to form the Glütschbach .

In winter, due to its location in the valley floor, the village is largely in the shade for six weeks.
