Heinz Karrer (born May 10, 1959 in Winterthur ; resident in Andelfingen ZH ) is a Swiss manager and former handball player. From 2002 to 2014 he was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Swiss energy services group Axpo Holding . Since September 1, 2013, he has chaired the economic umbrella association Economiesuisse . From April 2014 to May 2016 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuoni travel company .

Life

Karrer grew up in Winterthur. He completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Swiss Bank Corporation (SBG). Later he made up his Matura at the Cantonal Matura School for Adults in Zurich . At the University of St. Gallen (HSG) he began studying economics, which he broke off.

Karrer spent the first ten years of his career in the sporting goods industry, first as managing director of the sporting goods supplier association, then as managing director of Intersport Switzerland and managing director and board member of Intersport Holding . From 1995 to 1997 he was the head of Ringier Switzerland and a member of the management of Ringier AG. From 1998 to 2002 he was a member of the Swisscom Executive Committee, responsible for the Marketing & Sales division.

From 2002 to the end of January 2014 he was CEO of Axpo Holding. Until September 30, 2007, he was also CEO of Axpo AG (then Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (NOK)).

At the end of August 2013, Karrer was elected by the Board of Directors of the Economiesuisse business association as the new President on September 1, 2013 as the successor to Rudolf Wehrli . Due to the twelve-month notice period at Axpo Holding, Karrer gradually took over the business at Economiesuisse. Andrew Walo became Axpo’s successor on February 1, 2014 . Since his departure as CEO of Axpo, Karrer has concentrated on his 50 percent workload as President of Economiesuisse and has served on boards of directors.

Karrer has other offices in business. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Notenstein Privatbank . On April 25, 2014, Karrer was elected as a member of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) for the remainder of the 2012–2016 term of office; he replaced Gerold Bührer , who resigned prematurely. In 2016, Karrer was elected for the 2016–2020 term of office. He has been a member of the board of directors at the sports marketer Infront Ringier Sports & Entertainment Switzerland AG since summer 2015 . He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hasler Foundation. Until the end of January 2014 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG . He was president of the organization of the Swiss electricity network company (Swisselectric). From April 2014 to May 2016 he was President of the travel group Kuoni. He is also on the advisory board of the eduwo educational platform. In addition, Heinz Karrer has held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Company Factory AG since January 2020.

He is a former handball player who played for the clubs Pfadi Winterthur and St. Otmar St. Gallen . With St. Otmar St. Gallen, the player used in the left backcourt and center backcourt won the Swiss championship twice. In 1984 the 53-time Swiss national player took part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Today he is enthusiastic about mountain sports. He is married for the second time, has three grown sons and lives in Münsingen BE .
