The best known is the men's handball division . The Fanion team plays in the Swiss Handball League (SHL). The junior department is one of the most successful in Switzerland. St. Otmar plays his games in the Kreuzbleiche-Halle in St. Gallen.
Club history
The association was founded in 1924 as a Catholic youth association and named after Saint Otmar . The first president was E. Eichmann.
In 1931 the athletics group was founded. Only one year later, on May 25, 1932, the still existing Gymnastics & Games department was founded.
St. Otmar first took part in a handball championship in 1942 and took 3rd place in the field handball championship, which was held for the first time . A neat field handball stadium was built in the west of the city. In 1949, an indoor handball championship (called the St. Gall Championship) was held for the first time in winter , while field handball continued to be played in summer. In 1952, the Fanion team took second place in the National League B, Group East at the first Swiss championship in the hall.
Tennis has also been played in the club since 1959 . On July 1st, Beni Baumberger was elected 1st President of the Tennis Department.
In 1970, Stefan Matag initiated the establishment of the basketball department.
In 1972 50 football enthusiasts founded the football department. The games could be played on the field handball lawn in Lerchenfeld because this sport was discontinued and the handball championship was only held in the hall.
The fistball department was launched on August 18, 1978 .
TSV St. Otmar was purely a men's club until the basketball players set up the first women's team in 1980 and only a year later the women's handball team started the championship.
On July 1, 1996, the handball department was split into a men's and women's department.
The women's handball department was closed in summer 2010 due to financial and personnel difficulties.
