Toffen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

Surname

The name Toffen comes from the Roman word "Tofus" for tuff stone .

geography

Toffen is located in the Gürbetal and extends in a west-east direction from Längenberg to the hamlet of Heitern at the foot of the Belpberg and in a north-south direction from Toffenholz to Breitlohn. The highest point is the triangulation point above the Pfaffenloch at 881 m, the lowest point is the canal bridge at Toffenholz at 523 meters.

Toffen is 488 hectares in size. Of these, 83 hectares are settlements, 305 hectares are agricultural areas, 96 hectares are stocked (88 hectares of which are forest) and 2 hectares are unproductive areas (rivers).

Neighboring communities are Belp , Kirchdorf , Kaufdorf , Rüeggisberg , Niedermuhlern and Wald in a clockwise direction from the north .

There are no lakes in Toffen. Rivers are the Gürbe and a tributary, the Müsche. There are two canals , the Toffen Canal and the Kaufdorf Canal. The remaining waters are streams .

There are over 60 place and field names in Toffen. The most important districts include Toffen, Toffenholz, Heitern, Untere Allmend, Obere Allmend, Schloss , Fahrbühl, Oberes Breitlohn, Unteres Breitlohn, Schmittenacker and Zälgli.

The current coat of arms of Toffen was adopted as the municipal coat of arms in 1943. The blazon of the coat of arms reads: “ In red, a striding swan with a golden beak and golden feet. "

Toffen Castle

There was an important Roman farm in Toffen. In 1894 a well-preserved Roman mosaic was excavated in Toffen. It is now in the historical museum of Bern . The Schloss Toffen was probably built from 1200 to 1250, it was first mentioned on March 5 1266th Today it is one of the cultural assets of national importance.

The valley floor of the Gürbe valley used to be an alluvial land, a poor area that was repeatedly flooded by the wild Gürbe . It was straightened between 1855 and 1911, but there were repeated floods. On July 29, 1990, there was a major flood disaster in Toffen . 67 buildings were flooded, including a large industrial company.

The voters of the community of Toffen determine the fate of the community at the community meeting or at the ballot box . Other organs of the municipality are the municipality council , the auditing body, the commissions and the municipality staff.

At the municipal urn election for the 2017 to 2020 term of office, the following were quietly chosen: Rohr-Achermann Ruth (FBT Freie Bürgerinnen und Bürger Toffen) as municipality president and Bütler Carl (SVP Toffen) as municipality vice-president. The following were elected as members of the municipal council: Aeberhard Kaspar (FBT), Bütler Carl (SVP Toffen), Gfeller Andreas (non-party), Grogg Fredy A. (FBT), Rohr-Achermann Ruth (President, FBT)

The voting shares of the parties in the 2015 National Council elections were: SVP 35.7%, BDP 17.7%, SP 15.2%, FDP 7.1%, glp 6.0%, GPS 5.5%, EPP 5.1 %, EDU 2.4%, CVP 2.0%, pirates 1.1%, Alpine parliament 1.2%.

Toffen is well served by public transport: the Gürbetalbahn , which has existed since 1913, is now part of the S-Bahn lines 4/44/3 and is operated by the BLS Group. Every half hour there are connections to Bern with a journey time of 17 minutes and to Thun with a journey time of 23 minutes. There is also a bus line from Toffen to Riggisberg (travel time 13 minutes).

economy

Toffen belongs to the outer agglomeration belt of Bern. The proportion of commuters in the village population is correspondingly high. However , there are also around 300 jobs in the village in industrial , commercial and commercial enterprises . One of these companies is the old-timer gallery , which is known far beyond the country's borders .

The agriculture is as usual in Gürbetal heavily on the cabbage aligned -Anbau, in «cabbage» is much sauerkraut produced. A witness to this old tradition is the annual public “Chabis Hoblete” (1st Saturday in October) in Toffen.
