Pfaffenloch
The Pfaffenloch is a cave in a sandstone fluh in the Swiss municipality of Toffen near Bern . It is partially accessible and is located on the Gürbetaler Höhenweg between Niedermuhlern and Guetebrünne ( Gutenbrünnen ) at an altitude of 781 meters. The ascent from Guetebrünne takes about a quarter of an hour.
In 1072, the two monks Ulrich and Cuno, the builders of the Cluniac monastery in Rüeggisberg , lived in Pfaffenloch .
According to a legend, the Cluniac monks from Rüeggisberg, who are particularly pious, celebrated wild festivals in the Pfaffenloch. Another tradition in the book “Magisches Bernbiet” tells of druids who are said to have used the Pfaffenloch as a place of worship in the time of the Celts .
The cave partially collapsed in the summer of 2013 and has not been easily accessible since then.
November 2017: the access route is closed due to the risk of falling rocks; the cave entrance looks compromised.
