Freimettigen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Freimettigen lies at 675  m above sea level. M. , 1.5 km south of Konolfingen and 13 km north of the city of Thun (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in a promising location slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the Chise , which here leaves the Konolfingen valley, at the western foot of the Kurzenberg , in the pre-alpine hill country.

The area of ​​the 2.95 km² large municipality covers a section of the pre-alpine hill country east of the Aare valley . The area is crossed from north to south by the Chise in a broad valley basin. On the western flank of the valley, the Dessikoferwald (up to 760  m above sea level ) on the Lochenberg belongs to Freimettigen. To the east, the municipality extends over the open slope to the forest heights of the Kurzenberg, where on the Vorderen Tanzplatz with 1008  m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of open leaves is reached. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 30% by forests and woodlands and 64% by agriculture.

Freimettigen include the Dessikofen farm group ( 660  m above sea level ) in the Chise valley and some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Freimettigen are Konolfingen , Niederhünigen , Linden , Oberdiessbach and Häutligen .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1282 under the name Vrimuetingen . Later, the names Frimitingen , Frimeitingen (1389), Frimentingen (1411), Frimmuttingen (1529) and Frymettigen (1580) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Frimuot and therefore means for the people of Frimuot .

Freimettigen belonged to the rule of Hünigen since the Middle Ages . The monasteries Interlaken and Fraubrunnen also owned land in the municipality. The sovereignty of the area passed from the Counts of Kyburg to Bern in 1406 , and from then on Freimettigen was subordinate to the Konolfingen Regional Court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Höchstetten district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Konolfingen Oberamt, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Freimettigen does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Oberdiessbach.

With 466 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Freimettigen is one of the small communities in the canton of Bern. 94.1% of the residents speak German, 2.8% speak Spanish and 1.5% speak English (as of 2000). In 1850 the population of open-leaved vegetables was 227 inhabitants, in 1900 it was 207 inhabitants. In the course of the 20th century, the population always fluctuated between 200 and 290 people. Since 1970 (258 inhabitants) a significant increase in population has been recorded.

The voting shares of the parties in the 2019 National Council elections were: SVP 34.5%, EPP 11.9%, GPS 11.3%, BDP 10.6%, EDU 7.7%, SP 7.5%, FDP 6.5 %, glp 3.6%, CVP 1.1%.

economy

Freimettigen was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, the dairy industry and cattle breeding have an important place in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Freimettigen is the municipality where the Upper Kiesental wastewater treatment plant is located. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employees are therefore commuters who work mainly in Konolfingen and in the Bern-Thun area.

traffic

The community is located off the main roads, but is easily accessible from Konolfingen. The closest connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun) is around 8 km from the town center. Freimettigen itself has no connection to the public transport network, but the Stalden stop on the Burgdorf - Konolfingen - Thun railway line is only around 500 m away.
