history
Remains of a prehistoric defense system on the Eggrain indicate an early settlement of the Herbligen municipality. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1302 under the name Herblingen ; from 1312 the name Herbelingen has been handed down. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Harbilo or Herwilo and therefore means for the people of Harbilo / Herwilo .
Since the Middle Ages , Herbligen was part of the Diessbach rule, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Kyburg . At the end of the 14th century, the sovereignty came to Bern. From 1471 Herbligen belonged to the free court of Steffisburg. The high level of jurisdiction under Bernese rule always lay with the Konolfingen district court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Herbligen belonged to the Steffisburg district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Konolfingen Oberamt, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Herbligen does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Oberdiessbach.
