Rüeggisberg ( [ˈryə̯kisˌbɛrɡ] ) is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

church

Rüeggisberg is 930  m above sea level. M. , 14 km south of the canton capital Bern (air line) and roughly in the middle between Thun and Friborg . The village extends from a panoramic location on a terrace on the southern slope of the Rüeggisbergegg , which is one of the heights of the Längenberg , above the valley furrow of the Grüenibach .

The area of the municipal area of 35.7 km² covers a section of the pre-alpine hill country west of the Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The area has a great variety of landscapes. The northern part of the municipality is located in the black water catchment area with strong relief . This landscape is characterized by the notched valleys of the Bütschelbach and the Schwandbach , which are fed by numerous streams from short side valleys and ditches. Between these valleys and ditches there are hill projections (so-called harrows) with often very steep slopes, which are difficult to work agriculturally and are therefore mostly made up of meadow and pasture land. The western boundary is the Schwarzwassertal, cut deep into the molasse layers , with a valley floor that is around 100 to 200 m wide and filled with gravel , in which the river seeks its natural paths.

To the east of a line from Rüeggisberg - Bütschelegg - Niedermuhlern, the landscape changes abruptly to rounded shapes that have been polished and shaped by the ice of the Aar glacier ; gently sloping heights alternate with wide valleys. In the far east, the municipal soil extends to the edge of the Längenberg above the steep drop to the Gürbetal . The landmarks of this northern part of the municipality include the Bütschelegg ( 1056  m above sea level ), the Taanwald ( 998  m above sea level ), the Rüeggisbergegg ( 1047  m above sea level ) and the Riedhubel ( 910  m above sea level ). .

To the south, the municipal ban extends over the valley furrow of the Grüenibach , which ensures a simple connection between the Schwarzenburgerland and the Aare valley, to the wooded heights of the Gibelegg (up to 1055  m above sea level ) and into the valley of the Biberzen . Here, too, the western border is always in the Schwarzwassertal.

Far to the south is the exclave Nünenenberg in the source area of the Gürbe . It is located in the flysch zone of the Gurnigel cover and extends south from Selibühl over the source streams of the Gürbe and the Alp Obernünenen to the limestone peaks of Gantrisch (at 2176  m above sea level, the highest point of Rüeggisberg) and Nünenenflue ( 2101  m above sea level). ) and the ladder pass in between . In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 29% for forests and woodlands and 65% for agriculture; a little less than 2% was unproductive land.

Rüeggisberg is divided into four districts, namely:

In the course of the 20th century, the population decreased continuously by a further 35% to 1739 people until 1980 due to strong emigration. economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Rüeggisberg was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, dairy farming and cattle breeding as well as arable farming have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the municipality there are two cheese factories, companies in the building trade and the electrical industry, joineries, sawmills and carpentry shops as well as mechanical workshops. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employees are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Bern.

tourism

Alpine panorama from the Bütschelegg

The region around Rüeggisberg is a popular local recreation and hiking area from Bern and Thun. From the hills there are beautiful views of the foothills of the Gantrisch and Stockhorn ranges as well as the Bernese Alps . The watershed on the Nünenenberg is the starting point for hikes in the Gantrisch area. In winter the region is suitable for skiing and cross-country skiing.

Rüeggisberg is located on one of the main routes on the Swiss part of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela (route Thun - Schwarzenburg - Friborg). For many pilgrims, Rüeggisberg is a popular and, not least because of its panoramic location, a very attractive stage destination. From Rüeggisberg some pilgrims turn directly down to Wislisau and then to Schwarzenburg; the others hike first along the road leading to Hinterfultigen to a vantage point with a wide panoramic view and then climb steeply down to the Schwandbach bridge in order to also reach Schwarzenburg.

traffic

The community is located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from the cantonal road from Friborg via Schwarzenburg to Thun ; There is a direct connection with Kehrsatz and the city of Bern via the Längenberg . Rüeggisberg is connected to the public transport network through the PostBus courses, which serve the routes from Köniz to Riggisberg and from Riggisberg to Hinterfultigen. The hamlets in the Grüenibachtal are accessed by the post bus line from Riggisberg to Schwarzenburg.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1076 under the name Roggeresberch ; The name montis richerii is also latinized . Later the names Roquespertum (1109), Rochersperc (1148), Ruakersperch (1152), Ruogersperg (1224), Rucesperc (1228) and Rüggisberg (1281) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Hrodger and therefore means mountain of Hrodger .

Rüeggisberg was built around the Sankt-Martin church, mentioned since the 9th century, and belonged to the area of the Barons of Rümligen. The history of the village is closely related to that of the Cluniac monastery Rüeggisberg , which was founded in 1072 by the Barons von Rümligen. After the monastery and its property had been incorporated into the cathedral in Bern in 1484, Rüeggisberg was assigned to the Seftigen district court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Rüeggisberg belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Seftigen district, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Until the municipality was centralized in 1947, the districts of Rüeggisberg, Bütschel, Fultigen and Graben (Rohrbach, Helgisried, Schwanden) performed municipal tasks.

Attractions

Saint Martin Church

Landmarks of Rüeggisberg are the ruins of the monastery (12th century) of the former Cluniac priory on a promontory at the southwest entrance to the town. In the village stands the St. Martin's Church , the core of which goes back to a foundation by Queen Bertha of Burgundy in the 9th century. Over the years, the church has been redesigned and restored several times.

In Rüeggisberg and in the various hamlets there are numerous characteristic farmhouses. Particularly noteworthy is the closed townscape of Oberbütschel with its intact Bernese farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries. A Rudolf von Tavel memorial is located on the Leuenberg . The listed objects also include the Rossgraben Bridge (1932) over the Schwarzwasser and the Schwandbach Bridge (1933) on a narrow connecting road from Schwarzenburg to Hinterfultigen. Both bridges are reinforced concrete structures that were designed by the civil engineer Robert Maillart , who is best known for the Salginatobel bridge in the canton of Graubünden .
